Yuba Days

From Sasha

I am happy to report that I spent most of this past weekend at one of the loveliest places on earth, the South Fork of the Yuba River. This lil' piece of Heaven is just 20 minutes from my house, and naturally it is the first place our friends want to go to when they come up to visit. One of my dearest friends, Tomi, came up Friday evening, and we hiked in and camped out along the banks of the Yuba, eating really good food and talking nonstop between taking naps on hot rocks in the sun. Hard life, eh?

Obviously the end of summer: we each brought 4 tubes of sunscreen that only had one squeeze left in them!

Martha Stewart is going to have a heart attack when she sees that we used a LEG to display our gourmet creation– oh well! It is too divine and was invented on the spot while we ate breakfast. Ingredients: one baguette slice, goat cheese, sliced fig, and one piece of Dagoba Xocolatl Chocolate (the one with spicy chili nibs). It tastes like a gourmet chocolate cheesecake… trust us.

Tomi's new tattoo! She is from Ely, Nevada, which is on the Highway 50 (also known as "The World's Loneliest Highway" because the towns are so far and few between)– and that's what is represented in this amazing work of art. Check out the Nevada wildflowers in the foreground!

Snowmelt Rivers and Tiger Lily Meadows: Vintage Dresses in the High Sierra

From Sasha

Monday, Monday. This day, as I live it now, at a desk job with a ringing phone and an endless pile of paperwork and filing to do… well, at 5:00 my Gypsy Feet are itching to run away to the hills. Oh wait a minute– I already live in the hills! The only thing that satisfies, then, is to get deeper into the wild. Today I burst out of the office and drove up up UP the Highway 20 to the very edge of the High Sierra– to the place where you can see the backbones of the mountains, and where the plants, who were still under snow when those of us below were running around in bare feet, think it is yet early summer. By the Bear River I could hear the lilting voices of the Fae, and the wetland meadow smelled of wild onions and mint. Ahh… my true home.

Have some of you been sending wonderful Intentions our way, that we should find THE best dresses this week? These four are just the tip of the iceberg, my friends! They will be in the shop Tuesday night… meanwhile, if you want to visit this wonderful corner of planet earth, here's how:

From the Highway 20, take the Bowman Lake Road turn. Shortly after turning, you will see the sign for the Sierra Discovery Trail on your left. Pull in and park here, follow the boardwalk over the wetland to the main trail. Happy hiking!

Sun Catcher

From Sasha

It's that time of year when I finally start to notice that the sun is going down earlier. The crickets are getting louder at night, and the river– oh, the river. There is never enough Summer for the river. Whether I want to face it or not, when the Equinox comes the Yuba will be too cold for me to go swimming anymore… and that is a mere five weeks away! So, like everyone else, I am trying to make some room in my busy August to get in the water.

I figured I would seize the day and take pictures of these awesome dresses that I just scored!:

The setting sun was shining right on me for a few minutes, and I got a total Duran Duran look in this picture:

No, seriously! Let's all have a closer look at this beauty from the 60s:

The very beginning o
f twilight has got to be my favorite time of day– it's so bittersweet, and so ethereal. Things must end for others to begin, I know, but I hate to see the summer go! I'm holding on til the very last minute…

Canyon Days

From Sasha

This weekend I went to visit my parents, who live about 40 minutes East of San Francisco in the San Ramon Valley. San Ramon is famous for three things: the Ashram which hosts the yearly U.S. visits from Amachi (the female Indian guru who gives hugs and Hershey kisses); spectacular moonrises; and, in my opinion, The Very Best Tree.

It is an incredible specimen of California Buckeye that has multiple arms reaching octopus-like from the earth to cover a whole section of the canyon. In the winter the ground is carpeted in Chickweed, a nutritious food-herb, and in late summer it is thick with the Buckeye leaves. California Buckeye is the first tree to leaf out in the spring, and the first to drop its leaves in the fall, so it is a kind of bell-ringer for the change of the seasons. I used to spend many an hour sitting on these smooth and sinuous branches, playing guitar to the frogs in the seasonal creek which runs right beside it. In fact this is where I learned that frogs will actually sing along with music!

In late summer the Thistles have all dried to the same shades as the grasses… infinitely photographable. Check out the birds perching in the ones above!

Naturally I hiked out there with a bag of clothes and a tripod…
