This winter has been the most challenging time in my life. The postpartum year or so was pretty gnarly, but fairly stable compared to what’s gone on over the past three months. My partner Graham and I came thisclose to splitting up (thereby splitting our family up), we lived in a waaay too small house under the thumb of an irrational, mean-hearted landlord, we struggled every day to come up with enough money to make ends meet, and we got into some hurtful and emotional personal drama with some of our best friends.

I felt like I was drowning, kicking my way to the surface, hoping for that break in the fabric of the water where it would give way to air. We searched constantly for a new home, new jobs, we talked and talked our way through our problems and the problems with our friends. But still there was no give. Nothing was shifting, despite my and our efforts.

During my last period I did some (apparently, very strong) “magic” in my own little way with the intention of deeply grounding and strongly centering myself in order to push through the stagnation.

And then last Monday I was driving along a curvy, scary road (Highway 20 between Nevada City and Truckee) in a rain/snow storm with three and a half year old Mycelia in back. I must have been lost in thought, because suddenly I realized that I had lost control of our truck, that it was slipsliding across the wet road. I don’t remember what I did, tried to get it under control I suppose. But soon I saw that we were careening toward, fishtailing in a 180, right at the dirt embankment that had been to our right but was about to be to our left. The bed of the truck clipped it and…

Next thing I knew I woke up upside down. I didn’t feel fear when the car was sliding around and I didn’t feel it now either. I went into pure Mommy Survival Mode. Get myself out, then get her out. She was talking to me, “Mommy I’m hurt, mommy I’m hurt” so I knew that she was alive and aware. I unbuckled my seatbelt and turned around onto the roof/floor of the truck, opened the door, and climbed out. There were already two cars pulled over with men running to help (this is how I later realized that I had blacked out momentarily). I ran around to the other side of the car to get Mycie out but it had landed at such an angle that her door was dug into the earth, and I couldn’t get it open. One of the men, in his 50’s at least, exhibited some serious strength by pushing the side of the truck up out of the ground and was able to open the door for me. I reached in, undid her carseat buckles, and pulled my baby outta there. She had a bruise on her left eyelid and broken capillaries all around her eyes (and carseat strap indentations on her neck), and that was it. The right side of my neck was aching a bit, but the fight-or-flight hormones prevented me from feeling all the other little hurts until later.

The cops came, the ambulance came, I tried to rescue our various belongings from the truck. The EMT’s loaded us into the ambulance and took us to the hospital. On the way Mycie chided the driver Mark for going too fast on slippery roads, and told Jerry, in back with us, to sit down and put on his seat belt. She was so amazing that day, and ever since. I see no signs of trauma in her. She has said a few times since then, in the car when we’re driving, that she doesn’t want us to “fall down” in the car again. I have researched car accident trauma in children and she is displaying no signs of it. She and I both went to a healer friend of mine and he did find some compression in her neck that he fixed right away, and I plan to have her get some craniosacral work soon. And I will continue to listen to her when she talks about it and be open to anything she may have to express.

As for me, the bodywork I received from my friend was invaluable. I had a rib out, compression in the neck, severe pain in my right neck (diagnosed in the ER as whiplash- my xrays were fine), and achy hips. All this I knew before seeing him. But it wasn’t until I was lying there on his table that the bruises on my head were discovered. Now this was less than 24 hours after the crash, and I had been going through and processing a lot in that time, but how the ache and tenderness there evaded me is a mystery. It is now, four days later, what I feel the most. And what scares me the most. Head injuries can often wait months or even years to manifest. But I feel like this is okay, just normal bruising. To be expected after one’s roof has literally caved in.

After the initial healing session I called Graham, who had just been at the tow truck place and had taken these photos:

He said that the guys there were amazed that the driver had survived. I said to him, “Just imagine if someone had been in the passenger’s seat, they’d be dead for sure.” The reason I thought this is because, in the picture that I am so glad I thought to take at the crash scene (at the top of this post), I thought that the front seat facing the camera was the passenger’s seat. I thought this because I crawled out the other side when I came to, and I didn’t remember moving to the other side of the car to get out. But Graham pointed out to me, “Amber, that is the driver’s side.”

Holy. Shit. And then seeing the photos he took it’s like “Ohhhh, no wonder the left top side of my head hurts like hell”.

In the ambulance on the way to the hospital (they had a carseat for Mycie and I had to be strapped to the stretcher) I suddenly realized for the first time… Oh my god, we were protected. We should not have walked away from that. (And this was before I had seen Graham’s photos and realized how dented in the driver’s side headspace was!). I just got this overwhelming bodily feeling that some spirits or something had enveloped us in a warm bubble of *just enough space* and shielded us from the severity of the impact. I mean, she has a bruised EYELID, I have bruises on both sides of my head- if the parts of the car that hit us had penetrated a half, a quarter, of an inch deeper…

I have always had a deep affinity for whales. And it was the whales who popped into my mind first as I lay there on the stretcher fully realizing what had happened and sending all my loving and grateful energy to whatever had been there with us. It seems so appropriate. Whales are so fucking grounded they’re underwater. They move slowly, with intention, in their dark worlds, sending out and receiving vibrations to give them information about their surroundings and those close to them. Waking up upside down, knowing that my whole life had just changed, was like being momentarily submerged in an underwater womb of new beginnings. One of my first thoughts, hanging there, was “something really good had better come of this”.

(A friend sent me a beautiful facebook message with the subject line HEALING LOVE after seeing the photos of the crash, and it included these lines: “This is proof and a big reminder that YOU HAVE A MOST IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL MISSION ON EARTH AT THIS TIME. That is it. And you have a momentum of blessings coming around to you as the snap back of what you put out into the dimensions of the world.”)

And man that snap back started right away and has been awesome. A few days after the crash we found out that we got the house rental we had wanted! After months of searching and trying, this is *very* exciting news.

And the settlement money! The truck was listed on craigslist at the time of the crash. I had spun out in the rain last fall as well- a rear wheel truck with a light back is dangerous, and I never felt safe in that car. But the settlement money we have just received far exceeded the price we were asking on the car (due to the payment plan the folks who sold the truck to us had been on), and we can use it to move into the new place, pay off one of our credit cards, pay off Mycie’s sweet little Waldorf preschool through the year, do some serious Violet Folklore shopping (!) so that I can really start rocking the shop once we are settled, and buy ourselves a new little family four wheel drive station wagon (or two).

So all of this makes me think of a radio interview I heard with the herbalist Rosemary Gladstar a few years ago. She ended up going off on a tangent about her Saturn Return and how life changing it was for her and this horrible car accident she was in during that time. I thought about how mine was coming up and just hoped that it would not involve a car accident. Luckily for me, my injuries were far less severe than hers. But nevertheless, it was a lesson.

Okay, so even though I have to say that nearly everything I’ve ever read about Aquarius seems to describe me pretty accurately, and even though I have found my friend Li’s astronomy/astrology wisdom 100% accurate and helpful, I am still enough of a skeptic about astrology that I wasn’t so sure I even believed in this “Saturn Return”.

Until now. A friend said, “It is one of the realest things I know. Let it be your teacher.” To which I replied, “Oh girl, it’s schooling me.” I mean, there was all the struggle of the last few months, and then I literally get flipped upside down, knocked unconscious, and then awaken to a new reality. That’s exactly what the Saturn Return is about, and I am certainly paying attention to what is being revealed.

Other really positive outcomes of this include the healing of relationships that had been strained (this sort of thing really makes you realize what and who is important, and what baggage it’s time to let go of), and something that was really needed for me – a deeper spiritual connection with life, the universe, and all its manifestations. All of these important things that I had moved off to the periphery of my consciousness while in stressed out survival mode this winter are now center stage – my loved ones who have passed on, the whale spirits, water spirits, and the essences of the many plants and herbs that I love but had been greatly neglecting (calendula and yarrow keep coming up especially). I feel them again, and I feel that they were in the car with us at the moment of impact.

It’s crazy to think of all the little moments and decisions that led us to be in that car on that road at that moment. Six years ago our friends purchased the truck that they would later sell to us, making sure to buy one with a good crash safety rating. One year ago my friend decided to go into the Peace Corps, and at the time of the accident I was driving home from Tahoe where I was for her going away party. That morning I had decided to go home another route due to the weather warnings, and had literally made the decision to go the way I did after all at the last possible minute before the road forked.

Which is to say, it all feels “meant to be”. As soon as I came to it all just felt right. It wasn’t a conscious thought, just a knowledge. Like, “Okay. It happened. It’s done. We’re okay. Time to take the actions necessary to move on from here.” I never felt regret or fear or “Nooooo!”.

And I am consciously putting it out there to the universe that I am open to all the lessons to be learned from this, to all the communication from all my little guides, to any healing that comes at me from whatever direction.

This is just the beginning. Of a new life, a new consciousness, a new connection. I have found myself again and am ready to move forward with my family into what comes next, knowing that I have love and support all around me.

From Sasha

I am happy to report that I spent most of this past weekend at one of the loveliest places on earth, the South Fork of the Yuba River. This lil' piece of Heaven is just 20 minutes from my house, and naturally it is the first place our friends want to go to when they come up to visit. One of my dearest friends, Tomi, came up Friday evening, and we hiked in and camped out along the banks of the Yuba, eating really good food and talking nonstop between taking naps on hot rocks in the sun. Hard life, eh?

From Sasha

Last Sunday I joined Chris and his dad for an adventure: we drove down to the Bay Area for the infamous Billetproof vintage car show. "Billetproof"'s name refers to billeted aluminum, the material that is often used on the super-shiny, super posh vintage cars that are maintained like untouchable museum pieces and seldom driven (or raced) in the real world. The Billetproof folks like to rebel against that monied and exclusive collector's culture with their own gathering, which features raw-looking vintage cars with artistic details and a lowbrow, fringe-of-society vibe (we even saw one that used a shotgun as the shift stick!). A lot of these cars not only look cool, but they go FAST… and, if you remember my post about how Chris and his dad are working on a racecar for the speed trials in Bonneville, you know that FAST is the new modus operendi in our household.

We started off the day with a good old fashioned Swap Meet in Auburn. A swap meet is exactly what its name implies, a place for people to swap and buy goods, mostly of the automotive variety. There were lots of random things, too, of course:

…and lots of guys standing around piles of rusted metal:

Now I'm not really being fair to call it rusted metal, am I? Those are car parts, some of them hard to find anywhere but at a swap meet. Still, the guy with the 45 records was more up my alley. Here are my scores!:

Next stop, Billetproof in Antioch. We went in Chris' Dad's mustang, and took the back roads through the Delta to get there.

There were a lot of lowriders at Billetproof… cool! We loved this unexpected color combo, and the flames:

Here are the Men, standing by a Rat Rod (a term for a street rod with a pronounced retro aesthetic hearkening back to the 1950s) in matte black. The matte paint not only looks way tougher than shiny black, but it is a tribute to the less expensive paint that your average kid making a street rod back in the 50s could actually afford. Chris' dad grew up in the Bronx during this era, and had a car much like one of these. So cool.

I totally dig all the pinstriping that you see on these cars… what an amazing art form:

Billetproof has a Pin-Up girl contest, which means lots of seriously done-up ladies walking around the Fairgrounds! Here they are getting ready for a photo shoot:

This car was my personal Best of Show. This kind of paint job is called "scalloping", and it just slays me. Did any of you watch the TV show "Crime Story" in the 80s? That pretty much cemented my love for this era of automobile. Sigh.

He is up to a car customization project of his own at home… he is turning a 1970 BMW into an American-design-influenced Rat Rod.
From Sasha

I am just back from the most amazing holiday weekend ever, which I spent up in Portland, Oregon. It wasn't just a regular vacation– one of my best friends in the whole wide world got married, to an actual Prince Charming. Such joy! I am still tearing up about it. I wanted to share with all of you some pictures from the fun, though I am short on proper pics from the wedding cause I was in the bridal party and didn't want to carry a camera. Still, there is something to be said for my random snapshots of Portland and the wedding prep. If you have never been to this amazing, young, vibrant city, you should get there now. And if you like vintage clothes….well, duh!…. it's a Wonderland. Officially.

We spent an entire day inside Powell's City of Books. Occupying a full city block, it is one of the biggest independent book stores in the entire world.

On this trip we discovered Voodoo Donuts, a veritable temple to Sugar and Weirdness. In the window:

And inside:

They make every kind of donut, including donuts covered in breakfast cereal, a huge variety of vegan donuts, and assorted Wacky Characters. They were blasting Bikini Kill at an ear splitting volume when we were there… my first time hearing Riot Grrrl rock in a donut store, a moment never to be forgotten. In fact, it seems like every business in Portland, even the corner store, blasts their music of choice, no matter what it is. Portlanders believe strongly in freedom of personal expression!

In the parking lot:

It seems like some genius painted every blank wall or garage door in the city:

An someone has also set up a food cart in every vacant lot!:

I was back at my favorite stomping ground, The House of Vintage on Hawthorne. A Wonderland, indeed, complete with the initial sensation of falling down a rabbit hole made entirely of clothes.

Me and my friend Tammy pretending to be fighting over a purple Gunne. No dresses were harmed in the making of this picture. (In fact, this dress will be for sale this week!)

I think I mentioned this after my last visit to Portland- what is up with the bathroom art? No surface goes undecorated in this town. The collages walls of the ladies room at Olde Towne Pizza really took the cake. I have a big weakness for collages:

The bride's band, Fever, played a show the night before her wedding. Yes, they are hardcore! The almost-married Automne is on the left, in gold, playing the keyboards, and that's her singer and flower girl Natalie in front:

So Automne got this incredible, Blair-from-Gossip-Girl hotel room for all the Bridesmaids and Flower Girls to get ready in. She even had macaroons and champagne! Seriously, I could get used to this kind of living. Here we are sprucing up:

Chris and Vanessa. (Yes, Chris was one of the Bridesmaids, since he is one of Automne's closest friends.) We loved how this pillow matched his shirt:

Getting closer to leaving for the ceremony! Can you see the bride under the tulle?

Here she is, with her dress in all its glory. This dress came with a few flowers on it, but most of the work is hers. Yes, your jaw just dropped.

So far this is the only pic I have from the wedding itself. We are all singing and waiting for the bride and groom to come up the aisle. That's me in green!

Now this was one seriously rock n' roll wedding, peoples… right down to the cupcake toppers. And yes, they are on a tiered stand made out of real records!

While the bride and groom stayed at their posh hotel, we all had a big sleepover at their house… with Susie Prue! Remember our interview with her? Well, this Etsy/blog friend clicked with Automne (who also blogs, of course!) and we all got to meet in person for the wedding. How cool is that?

Okay, enough normal pictures, time to cradle our Victorian Squash Baby.

Then last month my husband Graham and I went up to my home town of South Lake Tahoe for the wedding of two of my dear friends. I had brought three dresses with me, unsure of which one to wear. I had planned on having at least an hour at my mom's house to decide on a dress, but traveling with a two-year-old = CHAOS sometimes and we got to her house with about 15 minutes to get ready. I was near panicking.

My mom had told me on the phone that day that she had bought a red dress for me and left it on the bed. Well, lo and behold, she didn't tell me it was a red GINGHAM dress! (<– exactly what I texted her later. Turns out my post had lodged in her subconscious and resurfaced when she found this dress at, yes, Ross). When I walked into the room and saw it on the bed I straight up squealed with delighted surprise and serious relief. My decision was made, I immediately put it on and didn't take it off until about 1am.

Here's me and my sis, adorning ourselves with some table settings. Summertime is best for this, especially red gingham, and an outdoor setting also lends some credibility to such an outfit. As long as you strive to look polished, make it to the church on time, and don't try to make out with the groom on the dance floor, no one will question your choice of attire!

From Amber

Yes, I am alive! While Sasha has been R-O-C-K-I-N-G the shop and the blog I have been a busy lady packing for an upcoming move, mothering an almost-three-year-old, trying to get through all my library books, suddenly taking an interest in learning to cook new foods, and making many trips out of town.

Thus far the two weeks spent in my hometown of South Lake Tahoe, CA have been the best part of my summer. My dad moved away from there a few years ago and my mom is moving out in a couple weeks, so this was truly my last hurrah in the beautiful lake town where I was born and raised!

Mycelia and I went up there in late June for my ten year high school reunion and had a blast. Here are some highlights from that trip…

My sis works at an Old Time Photo Booth at Stateline:

Adorable cheesy smile of the century:

At Pope Beach with Auntie Lacey (this was a really fun and unexpected evening- we ended up having four families at the beach, all of whom have lived on the same street in Tahoe. In fact three still do, one of them being the family who moved into the house I grew up in when my parents divorced and sold it a few years ago!):

At Kiva Beach with my girl Alicia's youngest son River:

That's Alicia on the left, Linds, me, and Meg. I've know Alicia and Linds since we were 6 and Meg since we were 11. Later this evening we had a Michael Jackson dance party with Megan's parents and Alicia's husband and three sons (Treyton 8, Vance 4, and River 1) and me and Mycie. So fun!:

So my sister's boyfriend Tyler and our childhood friend Robert captain a ship that takes tourists parasailing out on the lake. For my sister's 26th birthday they took us out to go flyyying! Mycie could have gone up but decided she'd wait until she was older :-)

Later that night we had a pre-reunion gathering at my friend Stephanie's. Her family lost their home in the Angora fire in 2007 and it was just completed, so it was a sort of Welcome Back Home party too. I have known Steph since we were on the same soccer team and in the same dance class at age 5. These boys, Adam and Matt, are also old school
friends, as you can tell. I love this picture:

Adam trying on my favorite sweater ever. You better believe, if you've read this blog at all, that some people are under the impression that Sasha and I are Major Hippies. Well, it's pretty much true, compared with the rest of America at least. I get a lot of shit from my old friends, especially when I wear clothes that look like they used to belong to Willie Nelson:

Oh but don't you know that I also rock the girly pink gingham! And Meg rocks the green. This was taken at a beautiful backyard wedding reception:

No one I know has more fun with clothes than Megan. She has had this cropped red sequined jacket for eons. It is (in)famous in our group of friends. She always wore it on Cinco De Mayo in high school. This year she busted it out for the 4th of July, and dug out some old hammer pants for her brother Christian too! Yes, they wore these to the PACKED Lake Tahoe beach on the 4th. Talk about vintage awesomeness. (And yes that's a troll- Megan never gets rid of anything! She has heart shaped Dylan McKay earrings that she still rocks sometimes!):

Okay, now onto the reunion. It was held at the top of the Heavenly Valley ski resort- pretty rad!! We took the tram up:

I barely took any photos and this one is the jewel among the few. As we were all sitting down to dinner someone said "Let's go take a picture as the sun sets!" Great idea. It is a small town and high school and we were/are all so close. The reunion was one of the funnest nights of my life and you can see it in this photo:

Alicia's husband Jeremy busted out the tunes as deejay, and once everyone was sufficiently drunk the dancing began:

Most high school reunion attendees probably go their own ways when the official gathering is over at 10, or maybe they go to a bar until it closes at 2. In Lake Tahoe, we have the casinos. Which means we all partied and reveled in each other's presence until morning time. It took me a week to recover.

Here is me and Aly at Harrah's Casino, and I am including this picture to try and show off my dress! You know I fretted over what to wear fo
r months. It is not vintage but really quite looks so. There are three gold buttons (non-functional) at the chest, slightly puffed sleeves at the shoulder, and two comfy pockets. In the past mixing brown and black was a big no-no for me, but I liked this look. I was the only girl at the reunion in boots! I don't know how y'all can wear high heels all night long!

Dan and Matt. Dan was in a grade lower than us but I called him up and insisted he make the two hour drive to meet us at the casinos afterward. A lot of people who didn't want to kick down $75 did the same, so it was like a second reunion once we got there! LOVE this photo:

And there you have it! Not nearly as much gorgeous eye candy as Sash has been dishing up but fun nonetheless, I hope? Sure was for me.

I'll end with a shot of Miss Mycie in her favorite dress, a gift from Grammy (who gave it to her a few days after I asked her to never buy her clothes with a cartoon print! But she had already gotten it from Disney World and it's adorable and fun and, pretty much, Lesson #374 in Letting Go of Parenting Ideals)):

Sidewalk Art, Dolores Street

Last weekend was Pride in San Francisco, the biggest celebration in the whole world of the awesomeness that is the gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/tran-sexual community. Gay folks may be more present than ever before in the media and American consciousness, but (as I often have to remind people), it is seldom easy in our culture to grow up gay. There is still so much shame and fear around the expression of different sexualities, if not the experience of downright social ostracization and violence.

You might wonder why I am standing on my soap box in my fashion blog to tell you something you already know, but there is still an incredible amount of ignorance around this subject. In my small town the "cool" post-person raised is eyebrows sky-high when I told him where I was off to for the weekend, and even in the Bay Area I have known of people who have been beaten up, had rotting veggies thrown at them, etc., just for being "queer". So many of my friends are gay/lesbian, and I feel very strongly that they deserve all the rights afforded to "straight" people. This is not just a theory, it is a conviction that comes from life experience– try counseling a dear friend who, as a lesbian mother, lost her child when her wife left her, because gay marriage isn't legal in California and she had no legal custody. I could really go on. But let's talk celebrating!

Here I am at The Roxie on 16th Street… my friends Kymmie and Denah made a film (with me in it) called Devil's Dairymaid, which showed at the prestigious Frameline Gay/Lesbian/Trans-gender film festival, as part of the experimental film shorts program.

So my radable-awesome friends Kymmie Sioux and Denah made the coolest short film in REAL 16mm, starring me as, what else, The Devil's Dairymaid (no I didn't have to apply for this position, I admit… it was an inside job!). Their film has been chosen to show as part of the Canyon Cinemas Queer Underground Showcase at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco, this Friday night the 26th. I will be there to catch it on the big screen, and I'd love to see you there!

You might note, watching the trailer below, that one of the most important visual elements is a gorgeous white full-length Gunne Sax dress! And yes, I do spill milk VERY clumsily all over it… but I'm supposed to be kind of, um, possessed, so you have to forgive me.

It seems to me that a good belt is hard to find. A girlfriend of mine who has the best collection of Western and Hippie leather belts revealed her source: fashionable ex-boyfriends! (Not much help to me, since I've been married seven years!)

Over time I have finally built up my collection of Cool Belts so that my cup begins to runneth over… now when I find a killer belt, like the one below, it can actually end up in the store!:

When I was buying this one, another woman in line was admiring it and told me it reminded her of things she used to make at camp in the 60s. People used to know how to MAKE these? Man, I made friendship bracelets in the 80s, but that was nothing compared to doing beadwork!:

Another thing I seldom find is purses. Now I have a confession to make, that could shock some of you… I do not carry a purse, whenever I can avoid it! I am a pirate at heart, and when I go out at night I like to put my valuables safely in my boot. I've always been that way (and always worn boots, too, with only a recent foray into sassy high heeled ones). When I do have to tote a bag around, it is an embroidered over-the-shoulder one from Mexico that is completely falling apart, completely in need of a cleaning that I will never give it, and beloved to me as a favorite teddy bear. I have bought– and have been given– nicer, cleaner, newer bags, in an attempt to replace it, but nothing is knocking it off of its throne. So that means….. more purses for you! Like this one, made of perfect white leather, with an amber lucite handle:

Here I am, trying to demonstrate "street fashion" in the middle of a field. Ha ha!

I don't just stand around playing with my hair when I am at home, though, oh no! I also build fences by hand. Well, you are going to have to broaden your idea of a fence a little bit…

Here's the deal: I was actually in line at the hardware store with metal stakes and a roll of plastic mesh fencing, all ready to make my fenced-in veggie garden the regular way, when I suddenly got cold feet. In my mind, it was going to cost me $20… as if anything at the hardware store costs $20! But my total was over $100, and I just couldn't do it. Instead, I decided that I would somehow, ahem, "find stuff lying around" and make my fence.

Now I have a landlord who seems to think that every man's trash is his potential treasure, and there is a metric ton of "stuff lying around" our property. The problem is that it is HIS stuff, so even if its covered in blackberry vines and two decades of cobwebs, we can't really use it. The branches he pruned last year and never hauled away, on the other hand, were fair game! I dove in and started pulling them out from a tremendous pile, and weaving them together in an approximation of a circle around the spot I'd cleared for my veggie garden. The weaving has not stopped yet, since the more I work, the more agile the marauding deer become in my imagination, and the more I feel I have to add height and reinforce. It is hard, sweaty work, but hey! I saved $100! Here's a detail of the progress thus far:

Meanwhile, in the non-fenced part of the garden– the one full of herbs that don't tempt hungry deer–things are blooming out in a big way. The Lavender is super happy:

From front to back, we have Feverfew (for headaches and fevers), Lavender (the ultimate nervine, and plant of a thousand uses– I always keep lavender essential oil in my purse, since it comes in handy for everything– calming, as an antiseptic for cuts and scrapes, and even as a healer for severe burns), Yarrow (a genius herb that will stop excess bleeding and get stuck blood moving, and is also a great energetic protector, acting somewhat like a force field around a person), Vervain (the witches herb or Druid's herb, one of the most sacred plants to my Celtic ancestors, who used her for trancing and journeying in the spirit realm; used in modern times as a nervine), and Yellow Water Irises (not a plant I have used medicinally, except of course for the medicine that is Beauty):

This is the first year my Comfrey bloomed! Comfrey is also called "knit-bone", which tells you what it has traditionally been used for. Use of the root is controversial in the herbal world due to potential liver toxicity, but the leaves are used externally as poultices or salves for a thousand purposes, including speeding up cell regeneration.

Here is my beautiful Clary Sage, a gift from a friend, now going wild in the garden. Her potent smell is sharp and musky at the same time, and utterly unforgettable. Her essential oil is used in treatment of women's hormonal imbalances, and her effect is just as her name says: she "clears". She is a potent opener of the third eye, so much that she can overwhelm me in the concentrated essential oil form. In the garden she hangs out and looks beautiful, and her scent travels through the air like a husky Gypsy song.

Here is my Water Iris again… this is the first year she has bloomed! I poached a few of these from a place up the road where there were literally miles of blooms filling every stream and creek, hummingbirds at every flower– a breathtakingly lovely sight. I thought that she might not be getting enough sun to flower in our little holler, but I guess she just needed to put her energy into her root system for a few years. Now she is really expanding, and I hope one day the whole length of the stream in the holler is filled with these incredible blooms!

Here's my little Riparian Restoration project seen from another angle– this might look wild to you, but it is actually a careful recreation of what Should Have Been. When we moved in this little creek was being used as a trash heap, and it was covered in generations of yard waste and rusty bedsprings. Only the toughest weeds were making a living here. Chris and I put in a lot of blood sweat and tears pulling out the blackberries and the trash, and I restored the area to its natural state, using local plants and a few non-native herbs that I love. Now it is a thriving mini-ecosystem, and where there once were only crickets, there are now dozens of kinds of cool bugs and butterflies and bees!

If you look closely you can see Horsetail, several varieties of Mint, Mugwort, and Lemon Balm, among other things:

Blackberries are the delight and the bane of country living. They grow fast, get everywhere, are hard to get rid of when you don't want them, and a tangle with their briars will leave you torn up like you were in a fight with ten cats. But the fruit… oh, you cannot deny the appeal of the fruit. Looks like it's gonna be a good year for the berries, which is awesome. Blackberry is in the same family as the Rose, which you an see from the flower (and the thorns!):

The hardest thing for me about living in Grass Valley is… well, the grass! I am incredibly allergic to wild grasses and always have been, so I spend a few weeks in the spring with a stuffy head and puffy eyes. My allergies are a hundred times better this year because I did a test to find out what foods I was allergic to (eggs and garlic! can you believe it) (it's based on white blood cell response to these proteins in a sample of my blood, and if you're interested you can do this through a Naturopathic office like the one I work at) and took them out of my diet so that my general histamine (the makes-you-sneeze-and-puff-up chemical in your body) response could be lowered. I also eat tons of liver-friendly foods and try to avoid fried foods and too much cow dairy and wheat. Still, I get a little wheezy in meadows like this, but I can't help but find grass exquisitely beautiful…

The main building is a huge historic hotel. The whole place was so much more luxurious than I had expected. It wasn't overdone or ritzy, just furnished with very well made and beautiful pieces. There were plenty of fun nooks and crannies for photo takin':

Outside the building was a spacious, peaceful, hidden-away landscape:

…With a bat cave that houses the most endangered species in California. We waited until dusk and watched hundreds if not thousands of the little winged creatures blindly fly out in search of food:

We couldn't take any pictures of the lovely flumes that we soaked in because it's a "clothing optional" place, but here is an overhead view. The flumes are under the roof on the left, with one also to the left of the pool under the open sky (so nice at night!). There is also a sauna to the right of the pool. And yes, that's the hotel in back, and the owners' crazy house on the top left:

The little building at the top in this picture is a yoga space (complete with mats and a large rug). I spent some quality alone time up there each day after soaking my muscles into relaxation. There was a ton of wild yarrow growing around the building that I also spent some quality time with! In fact, the picture above was taken from this li'l yoga nook. The wall below is what hides the naked folks from the wider Wilbur world:

We were partially able to stay there for free because we hauled a bunch of rocks up for Ron, who Graham has been working with building rock walls. It looks like Graham will be able to spend a week or two back at Wilbur in August building another wall- and ensuring us future free stays there- YES!!! Here is some of Ron's work:
