Ghosts of the Old Days

Remember y’all, today is the last day to enter the giveaway!

Mycie and I have just returned from Christmas at my mom’s, where she wore this sweet dress I thrifted. And you wouldn’t believe the vintage I scored on our little getaway! I’ve never been so excited about my new stock. Sometime in the next few days I am going to start dabbling in indoor photography with my tripod and self timer. I love the outdoor shoots with my friends, but it’s hard having to plan my shoots around weather and other peoples’ availability. I would love to have both options.

My mom and her husband recently acquired a hot tub, so Mycie partook in that age old Christmas tradition- a dip in the jacuzzi.

It was as warm in Nevada as it’s been here in Cali, and we spent a nice afternoon at the park. We have video of my sister and I at this same park when we were kids (it’s a bout a 45 minute drive from where we grew up in South Lake Tahoe). In it, we feed the ducks and then two-year-old Lacey gets a bloody nose when she falls off the slide. It’s funny that my mom lives in this little town now, and I think of that day every time I bring her to this park. I’d sure love to get all those old VHS tapes digitized. Has anyone undertaken such a project?

Silk Elephants on Parade- Giveaway!

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a happy and relaxing Christmas yesterday. Mycie and I had a great time with all sorts of family at my mom’s house in Gardnerville, NV, home of the best thrift stores on earth (a personal theory which I am going to put to the test yet again later today…)

It is time for another Giveaway! Suuzi scored this silk dress with the most amazing primary colors and fantastic elephant print. The bust measures at 16″, the waist is 14″, and the length is 36″. It is a modern dress with the label “Voom by Joy Han U.S.A., M”. Zipper and hook and eye closure in back.

I wore it with this little golden elephant necklace my best bro Dan got for me in high school. He knew I loved elephants. They say it is good luck to wear the image of these highly intelligent pachyderms, you know.

I want to thank those of you who stepped out from the shadows and commented on my post On Dresses and Opinions. A few of the comments near about brought me to tears, they so eloquently put into words- and even gave me a brand new perspective on- what it is I hope I’m putting out into the world here. It was so nice to hear some new voices, and to be reminded that many more people are reading my blog than just the small handful who regularly comment. (Since I hear from them so often, I start to subconsciously think that they are my only audience when I am writing out a new post.) I can’t wait to get home after the holidays and more thoroughly explore the blogs of you ladies who I have not connected with before. I am getting deadly serious about meticulously cultivating my own private blogroll :-)

Solstice Cocktails & Stocking Stuffers

On Thursday night Art & Adie had a swanky holiday cocktail party. They set up a velvet quilted bar and drew up a menu of delicious drink options.

Here are Adie & Lindsay rocking the bar.

And Heather and little brother Mikie! I always love meeting people’s siblings, especially with bigger families, so I was happy to finally meet Mikie. I’ve known Adie, Heather, and Joey for a few years now- only one more sibling (and his lovely wife and their beautiful children) yet to meet! I love seeing all the family antics on Heather’s blog. Almost makes me want to have 5 kids!

Emily & Joey.

Heather took all of these shots. When she handed my camera back to me she said “Sorry, it’s pretty much all Placerville people.” Fine by me! If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Heather, it’s that the fine folk of the foothills to the south know how to party.

I’m glad that Heather thought to snap some photos of me too. I was all fancy in high heels, lace tights, and a little hair bow!

And Jessica was cute as ever with a little bow tie necklace.

But Rachel’s dress won for Outstanding Christmas Attire. In my book, anyway. This gorgeous gown inspired a conversation between us about how prolific Gunne Sax’s output was and how there are always new styles and materials to behold. They must have just been chugging away back then, putting out as many designs as they could as often as possible.

On Dresses and Opinions

My best vintage score of the year came just at the end here, when I got this perfect Gunne Sax sun dress from bonetoothantler at the Bizarre. Thank you Chelsea! It is the culmination of actual years of patiently searching. And I actually got to wear it sans sweater sitting out in the sunshine yesterday.

Since I’ve gotten back in the swing of things here in vintagey fashionish blog land, I’ve been thinking a lot about feedback and comments. Explaining to a friend why I wanted a Blogger plug-in for WordPress to make commenting easier, I was unashamed to admit that receiving comments is a big part of posting blogs. I mean, what is the point of creating anything if you can’t share it with people and hear their reactions to it?

My dad was and remains a huge fan of telling people when you like or support or admire what they do. The few times he was able to come to a high school football game when my sister and I were teenagers, he’d wait outside the locker room afterwards to congratulate any player he thought did particularly well. As a former athlete himself, he understood the value of positive feedback. It’s a practice he passed onto me, and I always strive to do the same now, to compliment and praise people in as straight forward and specific a manner as I can muster. Especially when I recognize how hard they’ve worked or how little feedback they’ve received.
